The Human Mind: An Exhibit on Psychology

“If free will is an illusion, the positive or negative consequences affect if preceding actions would be repeated.” Discerning illusion from reality is essential in operating in a group. Confucius illustrated this well with his writings in the book, Analects. The psychology books in Collections concentrate on the historic studies about human behavior and level of social acceptance by a group. Other schools for the study of psychology include Carl Jung, Burrhus Skinner, Siegmund Freud who sought to seeks to mold behavior and understand patients by way of analysis and dreams, emotions, observable behavior, psychologists study and heal others – they are the doctors of the mind and the healers of the spirit.

Human Development

“If free will is an illusion, the positive or negative consequences affect if preceding actions would be repeated.” Discerning illusion from reality is essential in operating in a group. Chinese philosopher Confucius illustrated this well with his ideas in his Analects regarding human behavior and level of social acceptance by a group. The Confucian method was to shame the “wrongdoer” (The Analects of Confucius, Confucius). Other schools of thought include Carl Jung, B.F. Skinner, Siegmund Freud who sought to seeks to mold behavior and understand patients by way of analysis and dreams, emotions, observable behavior, psychologists study and heal others – they are the doctors of the mind and the healers of the spirit.

According to contemporary schools of Psychology, early psychology pioneers have helped a number of modern disciplines such as Gestalt psychology. Carl Jung wrote Memories Dreams Reflections, which reveals his concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious. Buddhist Psychology understands well being as balance of: 1) mind, heart, intelligence, 2) mental things and 3) shape, visible form, material quality, in order to achieve 4) nirvana or enlightenment.

Psychology evolved out of the philosophical and biological explorations about how people think, act, and feel. "The Human Mind: A Psychology Exhibit" will explore how psychology is an important aspect of building better people - this includes exploring the different variables that affect behavior, and bringing balance between inner and external worlds to achieve well being.

In Practical Lessons in Psychology William O. Krohn incorporates psychology into teaching. Psychology can complement the purpose of education by encouraging self-education among people. The goal of education is to excite the child’s mind to activity: 1) What is the pattern of an ideal citizen that the teacher seeks to impart to the child? 2) How does one deal with the actual child before him, as the “raw material” to be shaped? 3) What methods of teaching could be used to convert the child into an ideal citizen (Practical Lessons in Psychology, William Otterbein Krohn). In Dora an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria, Siegmund Freud attempted to teach a psychologically distressed patient named Dora into healing herself. Confused about her marriage, Dora exhibited symptoms such as nervous coughing, chronic fatigue, and miseries (D ora an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria, Siegmund Freud). Freud’s goal was to rid Dora of her complicity in her own unhappiness. However, she was just a product of her circumstance: she was daughter to a sick father, lover to a sick mistress, and wife to a sick husband. Freud proposed “Milieu Therapy" which required revolution of her own (personal) culture. Freud often challenged Dora to step outside of her comfort zone to question her social structure publicly (Dora an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria, Siegmund Freud). Dora ended her treatment before Freud could complete his theory. Another psychological condition that Freud coined was the "Oedipus Complex," based on the Greek mythological character Oedipus (Freud and the Scientific Method, Paul Rosenfels). In Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud proffered a theory that sought to understand the mechanisms of mental repression and how the unconscious can disrupt conscious states of mind (Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Siegmund Freud).

Variables Affecting Psychology

Burrhus Frederic (B.F.) Skinner was an American psychologist and behaviorist that believed free will was an illusion. In Verbal Behavior, Skinner expounds upon the Principle of Reinforcement: if the consequences were bad, there was a high chance that the preceding action would not be repeated. However if the consequences were good, the preceding actions would be reinforced. Although this theory was useful in studying drug addiction, Skinner later invented radical behaviorism which argued that the environment produces other variables that impact actions and consequences. Ethical Systems by Wilhelm Wundt discusses the psychology of will and conscience depends on what the person believes as good and evil. Wundt argues that this depends on religious dogma or the psychological state of the person (Ethical Systems, Wilhelm Wundt).

Integrative Psychology

According to Contemporary Schools of Psychology, Robert S. Woodsworth described early psychology pioneers have helped a number of modern disciplines such as Gestalt psychology. Christian von Ehrenfels, Gestalt’s founder says that in order to understand a “melody,” it is important to “...have at least a few of the preceding tones simultaneously presented in memory...” Gestalt stated that to understand the psychology of the whole person, it is important to understand his different parts (Gestalt Psychology: A Survey of Facts and Principles, George W. Hartmann).

Carl Jung wrote Memories Dreams Reflections, which reveals his concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious. Individuation is the psychological process of integrating the opposites, including the conscious with the unconscious, while still maintaining their relative autonomy (Memories Dreams Reflections, Carl Jung). These theories helped to understand the process of human development, which were applied to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), a popular psychometric instrument (“Carl Jung,” World Heritage Encyclopedia).

Buddhist Psychology; An Inquiry into the Analysis and Theory of Mind in Pali Literature teaches that an individual's well being as balance of 1) mind, heart, intelligence, 2) mental things, and 3) shape, visible form, material quality, in order to achieve 4) nirvana or enlightenment (Buddhist Psychology; An Inquiry into the Analysis and Theory of Mind in Pali Literature, Caroline Augusta Foley Rhys Davids). This philosophy reflect how the inner world is very much related to external environment of people In order to restore spiritual, physical, and emotional balance in a person, there is a need for balance in the material world as well.

Psychology Collections

Psychology, the study to understand how people think, act, and feel, includes the study of the patterns that would lead to good behavior among people.
